You’re almost there – almost ready to have your new replacement windows bought and installed, but before you sign on the dotted line.

Here are 5 Things to Consider.

1. Choices.  Did you get them?  It’s a good idea to ask for a good, better, best bid when you go shopping.  If you didn’t, there’s still time to ask.  Ask if there is a more energy efficient options that will give you a good return on your investment.  Ask if there is a less expensive option that will still do the job.  You want a proposal that includes options and provisions such as what happens if you want to change something.  Ask for the manufacture’s literature and, maybe, even a sample.

2. Estimate.  An estimate is just that.  Think of it as a suggestion of what the contractor thinks they can sell you to do at your home.  It’s usually pretty simple – maybe too simple.  If all it includes is a single product, a color and no other options, start asking questions.  Get an estimatethat spells out exactly what your dollars are going to buy.

3. Contract. A contract is an official document.  You may have the right to rescind – usually within 3 days, but that is governed by the laws of each state.  It might be something you want to know.  Your contract should include – or you should ask for – the projected scheduling of the installation with an understanding that weather or another uncontrollable happening may change that schedule.  Your contract should be very specific about the windows you are buying.  It should name the manufacturer and include specifics on color, style, grids, handle styles and any other detail you expect when the windows are installed.

4. Manufacturer’s Warranty.  You want to know exactly how your windows are warrantied.  Some include lifetime glass-breakage coverage.  Remember, there’s a difference between the windows and the installation.  Know the warranties for both.

5. Payment Terms.  This one is important.  Does the window replacement company ask for a deposit?  That’s customary so expect it.  Some companies may want another payment when installation begins.  Others may want a final payment when the job is finished.  Some companies may even offer you installment payments.  Know exactly how you are expected to pay and if payments are offered, the interest on the balance.
